Congenital heart defects


Congenital defects of the heart are the commonest type of congenital defect in humans. About one in a hundred babies are born with a heart defect. Such defects are slightly more frequent in boys than in girls.

The prevalence of different types of heart defect varies widely. There are both minor and severe types that occur frequently, as well as minor and serious types that are very rare. The following table provides an overview of the prevalence of different heart defects.
