Quality assurance in the field of the treatment of congenital heart defects has been a very important concern for both expert associations for several years now. Now that the two-year QS project pilot phase has been successfully completed, the quality assurance measure will be implemented nationwide.
Following completion of the final concept and evaluation of the pilot phase, as of 1 October 2011 all paediatric cardiology and paediatric heart surgery centres can transmit data to a central database in an encrypted and pseudonymised form on all the interventions and paediatric heart operations that have been carried out. By initiating this project, the expert associations are fulfilling their self-imposed obligation to ensure the quality assurance of medical treatment whilst simultaneously providing valuable information to all the participating centres.
