Updated Corona Special 2022
The best protection against Covid-19 and the Omicron BA.5 wave
In the summer, the number of new corona infections in Germany rose again rapidly. With the coronavirus variant omicron and the new omicron subtypes BA.4 and BA.5, a new even more contagious virus variant is spreading.
Vaccination and boosters with the approved mRNA vaccines have been shown to provide the most reliable protection against severe disease. But the vaccination rate is not keeping up. In particular, vaccination rates of the youngest is barely satisfactory. Yet many vaccinated people who become infected develop little to no symptoms.
Those who do not test themselves regularly , the infection may therefore become an incidental finding. This increases the risk of infection. Despite many mild courses, the virus has its pitfalls. Those who have not yet been fully vaccinated risk a severe course of the disease and long-lasting health and social consequences, also in their environment. People with pre-existing conditions, including many with congenital heart defects, remain particularly at risk.
mRNA Vaccination From Five on
Vaccination is absolutely necessary now! The mRNA vaccines are also well tolerated by children with congenital heart defects and their effectiveness is the best protection against infection, severe courses of the disease and complications such as long covid and PIMS. Experts advise following the recommendations of the Ständige Impfkommission (STIKO) of May 24, 2022 and vaccinating all children from five years of age preferably with the appropriately dosed Comirnaty mRNA vaccine from BioNTech.
What is Scientifically Known and What is Still Being Researched
In addition to already established scientific knowledge about Covid-19 and effective protection against severe disease, misleading misinformation and false claims are still circulating. What is known so far about the risks and consequences of a Corona infection and why the vaccination is also important for children from 5 years of age, experts inform in our updated Corona Special 2022.
